The first step towards entering into this highly competitive field is to choose a specialization. Specializations are based on the field of medicine in which you plan to work. You can select from several areas of specialization including cardiovascular technologist, vascular technologist, nephrologist, cardiologist, pediatrician, and neurologist. Each specialization area focuses on a specific skill set that medical offices use on a daily basis. For example, cardiologists perform cardiac surgeries while nephrologists provide treatments for diseases of the kidney or urinary tract. Once you have chosen a concentration area, you must enroll to a certificate program. A certificate program can help you gain a valuable understanding of the medical field and its practices. Many certificate programs are available at community colleges and vocational schools. While earning your certificate you will also have the opportunity to develop job skills and learn about medical topics.

One of the main goals of a certificate program in biomedical instrumentation is to equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to start your own company or work as an outside employee performing clinical and administrative tasks for a medical device manufacturer. One of the primary topics included in the course of studies is clinical pharmacology. This section discusses common disorders and diseases that affect how we think, act, and process information in our body. Other topics include endocrinology, hematology, neurology, physiology, microbiology, and toxicology.

After you have completed your certificate in biomedical technology program, you will be able to choose either a two-year or four-year track. If you are planning on working in the medical device industry, you may want to go for a two-year track to get hands-on experience. However, if you plan on becoming a researcher, then a four-year track would be more beneficial. The courses generally begin with an overview of the human biology topics and then move to the more technical details such as protein structures, gene regulation, cell function, blood cells and tissues, and so forth.
